Sheet vinyl is a PVC plastic core bonded to either a felt or foam backing and topped with a printed design layer and a tough, transparent wear layer.
Unlike other types of vinyl, sheet vinyl isn’t purchased as a tile or plank but is instead ordered to length from large sheet rolls. As with most other vinyl floorings, sheet vinyl can be easy to install. It can simply be loose laid to a certain m2 depending on which option you choose and how busy the room is.
Sheet Vinyl is an affordable and simple way to bring resilient flooring with fantastic designs, such as wood, stone, or herringbone effect, into your home.
Is sheet vinyl the same as linoleum?
Although the two names have been used interchangeably over the years, sheet vinyl and linoleum are two separate types of flooring.
Linoleum, for example, is made from all-natural materials such as linseed oil, ground limestone and pine resin. Sheet vinyl on the other hand is made from synthetic materials, this allows for a more affordable product, as well as one with characteristics you wouldn’t find in a natural product.
Linoleum isn’t as flexible as sheet vinyl and therefore harder to cut. As such, it is certainly advantageous to use a professional installer to install linoleum. Sheet vinyl on the other hand is suitable for those that want to try their hand at a bit of DIY, thanks to the potential for loose laying.
Unlike linoleum, sheet vinyl is water-resistant, and as such can be installed in rooms where water is present, such as bathrooms or kitchens.
Is sheet vinyl easy to install?
Sheet vinyl can be very easy to install, depending on the room you want to put it in. For installation, you have two options, loose lay or glue down.
You can simply loose lay your sheet vinyl on top of your subfloor up to a certain size, for example, in our range you can loose lay the Nomad series of sheet vinyl up to 12 m2. It isn’t recommended that you lose lay in high traffic areas though, as the increased footfall can cause the flooring to shift or lift. As loose laying is as simple as fitting it into the room of your choice, it is ideal for anyone looking to try some DIY flooring.
The other way you can install sheet vinyl is by using glue down the adhesive. This adds further steps for installing your flooring and is only recommended for professional installers, or experienced DIYers, but provides greater stability in high traffic areas and larger rooms, ensuring there’s less likelihood of your flooring lifting at the edges.

Is sheet vinyl waterproof?
All our sheet vinyl is water-resistant and able to withstand the spills and splashes that come with everyday life, but it isn’t completely waterproof and can curl up at the edges if left underwater for too long. For this reason, sheet vinyl is perfect for the like of kitchens, bathrooms, and playrooms, where small spills can be cleaned up relatively quickly, but it isn’t advisable for any wet rooms.

Sheet vinyl can also be installed above water-based underfloor heating systems up to 27ºC, providing extra comfort for your toes on those frosty winter mornings.
Sheet vinyl vs luxury vinyl tile: which is better?
At the core of it, sheet vinyl and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) are very similar products. Both are composed of high-quality PVC core, felt or foam backing and a decorative top layer. As such, they share many of the same advantages, namely, easy DIY, simple maintenance, and great water resistance, but there are a few small changes between the two.
The primary difference is that sheet vinyl is cut directly from the roll as opposed to being supplied in tiles or planks. Even though there are seams between the tile, as long as it is installed correctly, all LVT that we sell is 100% waterproof, so shouldn’t deter you from using it in the likes of a kitchen or bathrooms.
Luxury vinyl tile is on average more expensive than sheet vinyl, but if a specific piece is damaged at any point, it is much easier to simply replace the tile. If sheet vinyl is damaged, you can either go through a bit more of a process to replace the damaged area or replace the entire floor.
The bigger difference comes with rigid core vinyl, which is 100% waterproof, and highly durable, but comes at a higher cost to both sheet vinyl and LVT.
